Cellulose is especially prone to this – it can lose a meaningful portion of its original depth within a few years, dropping below the R-value your home needs. If you can peek into your attic and see the tops of the joists poking through the insulation, or if the surface looks flat and packed rather than fluffy, settling is almost certainly the cause.
Moisture Damage
Water is the fastest way to ruin blown-in insulation. A roof leak, a poorly vented bathroom exhaust fan, or condensation from an aging HVAC system can soak cellulose until it clumps, molds, and loses nearly all its thermal resistance. Fiberglass holds up better but still loses performance when wet. Signs to look for: dark or discolored patches in the insulation, a musty smell when you open the attic hatch, or visible water staining on the attic decking above the material.
Pest Activity
Rodents tunneling through blown-in insulation don’t just damage it in one spot – they create pathways that destroy the continuous blanket the material needs to work. Squirrels, mice, and rats nest in the material, compress entire sections, and introduce contamination that makes the remaining insulation unsafe to leave in place. If you’ve heard scratching in the ceiling or found droppings near the attic access panel, pest activity is a serious candidate.
Air Bypasses and Missing Coverage
Sometimes the insulation itself is fine, but gaps around light fixtures, plumbing chases, HVAC penetrations, or attic hatches let conditioned air escape before the insulation ever has a chance to stop it. These air bypasses are invisible from above – the insulation looks intact, but heat is moving around it rather than through it. A room directly above an attic access hatch that’s always warmer or cooler than the rest of the house is a classic indicator.
What to Do Right Now
- Check your attic access hatch safely from the opening – you don’t need to walk across the insulation. Look for obvious thin spots, dark discoloration, or areas where the joists are exposed. Take a photo if you can do so without stepping into the space.
- Photograph any visible damage or staining before anyone touches anything. These photos help your technician understand what they’re walking into and give you a clear before-and-after record.
- Stop using the attic as a storage shortcut. Walking across blown-in insulation to reach stored items is one of the most common ways coverage gets disrupted. Until the inspection, keep foot traffic out.
- Note where in your home the problem feels worst – which rooms are hottest or coldest, and at what time of day. That pattern tells a technician a lot about where the coverage has failed.
- If you suspect moisture, don’t enter a wet attic yourself. Wet cellulose can be heavy enough to stress the ceiling below, mold spreads quickly, and the structural integrity of the decking may be compromised. Call for a professional assessment before going further.
