Rockwool Insulation Removal & Replacement in San Antonio: What to Know First

Rockwool insulation removal and replacement in San Antonio typically runs $1.50 to $3.50 per square foot depending on attic access, contamination level, and the replacement material you choose. Most jobs are done in one day, and we give you a firm quote before any work starts. As an independent Rockwool service provider, we’re not the manufacturer; we’re the local crew that removes old, failed, or contaminated Rockwool and puts in what actually works for South Texas heat.

This page is for homeowners who have Rockwool insulation (often from the ComfortBatt, Safe’n’Sound, or older loose-fill Rockwool products) that’s wet, moldy, pest-damaged, compressed, or just not doing its job anymore. If that’s you, call (866) 751-4428 and talk to Walt’s Insulation directly. We answer the phone live, 24/7.

How Rockwool Products Fail - and How We Fix Them

Rockwool gets a lot right, especially on the fire-resistance side. But San Antonio’s climate and a few product-specific quirks create removal and replacement jobs we see over and over. Here’s what actually goes wrong:

  • Safe’n’Sound in attic knee walls absorbing humidity. Safe’n’Sound is really a soundproofing batt, not a thermal product, but plenty of San Antonio homes got it stuffed into attic sidewalls and knee walls by contractors who had it left over. It’s dense stone wool, so it holds onto humid attic air. In a San Antonio attic that hits 140°F in August, that trapped moisture shows up as musty odor and, eventually, mildew against the drywall. The fix is full removal of the Safe’n’Sound, an air-seal of the cavity, and replacement with a proper thermal batt like Owens Corning R-38.
  • ComfortBatt compressed by attic traffic. We see this constantly. A contractor, a cable installer, or a homeowner goes into the attic and walks on the batts, or boxes get stored on top of them. Stone wool doesn’t spring back the way fiberglass sometimes will. Once a ComfortBatt is crushed to half its original loft, its R-value drops with it. The honest fix is removal of the flattened batts and fresh installation. There’s no way to “fluff” stone wool back to spec.
  • Older Rockwool loose-fill settling and leaving bare spots. If your home was built before the mid-1990s and has loose-fill Rockwool, it’s settled. Gravity plus the occasional roof leak or condensation cycle compacts it toward the ceiling joists, leaving the tops of the joists exposed. Those become thermal bridges, and you get hot spots in the ceiling. We remove the old fill, air-seal the attic floor, and blow new insulation to the right depth for our climate zone.
  • Pest contamination in stone wool batts. Rats and squirrels like stone wool, especially in attic spaces. It’s fibrous and dark, and once a rodent colony moves in, the batts are soaked with urine and droppings. Unlike fiberglass, stone wool doesn’t show the contamination as obviously, which means homeowners don’t catch it for years. This is a removal and sanitize job, period. We pull it all out, treat the attic for pests, air-seal entry points, and re-insulate.
  • Water damage from ridge vent and roof valley leaks. Rockwool’s water resistance is often oversold. A bat of ComfortBatt can shed a little water, but a roof leak that drips for six months will saturate it. Once stone wool is waterlogged, it mats and loses its structure. The only correct fix is removal, because adding dry insulation on top traps the moisture and rots your decking. We pull the wet batts, dry the area, and replace with new material, then flag the leak source for you before it causes bigger problems.

Our Rockwool Insulation Removal & Replacement Process

  1. 1
Call and talk to a person. You call (866) 751-4428, we answer live, and we ask about your attic size, when the home was built, and what you’re seeing or smelling. We’ll give you an honest expectation over the phone before we ever send a truck.
  2. 2
We inspect the attic properly. A uniformed, background-checked tech comes out, goes into the attic, and checks depth, density, moisture, contamination, and air leaks. We look at what’s there, what’s failed, and what your home actually needs.
  3. 3
We give you a written quote. Firm price, scope of work, materials, timeline. No vague lines. No change orders unless we find something structural you need to know about. And if you have a written estimate from another insulation company, we’ll do a free second opinion on it.
  4. 4
Removal and cleanup. We use commercial HEPA-filtered vacuum equipment to remove the old Rockwool, bag it, and haul it off. We don’t leave dust, fibers, or fragments in your home. The attic gets a thorough vacuum, not a once-over.
  5. 5
Air sealing and prep. Before new insulation goes in, we seal the attic floor penetrations: plumbing stacks, wire holes, can light housings, duct boots. This is the step most crews skip because it’s tedious. It’s also the step that makes your new insulation actually perform in a San Antonio summer.
  6. 6
New insulation, installed right. We install the replacement material at the correct depth and density for Zone 2. Your new insulation goes in level, consistent, and fully covering the attic floor. Then we test it with thermal imaging where it matters and walk you through what we did.

Every Rockwool removal and replacement job we do is covered by the Done Right Promise. If it’s not done right, we come back and make it right, no runaround, no expiration date.

What Rockwool Insulation Removal & Replacement Costs in San Antonio

Here’s what we typically see in San Antonio homes:

  • Basic removal only (compressed or settled loose-fill, no contamination): $1.20-$2.00 per sq ft of attic floor
  • Contaminated removal (pests, mold, water damage): $1.75-$3.50 per sq ft, includes sanitizing and disposal
  • Full removal and replacement with blown fiberglass to R-38: $2.75-$4.50 per sq ft total
  • Full removal and replacement with open-cell spray foam on the roofline: $4.00-$6.50 per sq ft of roof deck

What moves the price: attic access (scuttle hole vs. pull-down stairs vs. low clearance), how much contaminated material needs to be double-bagged and hauled, whether ductwork or wiring sits under the old insulation, and how much air sealing you need.
