When attic insulation stops working, it almost always means one of three things: the insulation has settled or degraded below the threshold where it can hold a temperature difference, moisture has gotten into it and killed its ability to resist heat flow, or something – a pest, a renovation, or years of foot traffic – has physically disrupted it. Why It Happens
Settled or Compressed Insulation
Blown-in insulation – whether fiberglass or cellulose – naturally settles over years. What started at a measured depth gradually compacts down, and every inch of lost depth means measurable loss in R-value. If you can safely look into your attic and the insulation sits well below the tops of your joists, or you can see the joists clearly at all, settling is almost certainly part of the problem. Older batts that have been stepped on or had equipment set on them show the same compression failure.
Moisture Damage
Water is the fastest way to ruin insulation. Fiberglass loses most of its insulating ability when wet; cellulose absorbs moisture and can hold it for months, during which time it compacts, grows mold, and stops performing. The telltale signs are discoloration – brown or black staining on the insulation surface – a musty smell when you open the attic hatch, or visible water staining on the attic decking above. Any of these points to a moisture source that has to be found and stopped before new insulation goes in.
Air Leaks Bypassing the Insulation
Insulation resists conducted heat, but it can’t stop air moving through gaps. If your attic has unsealed penetrations around light fixtures, plumbing stacks, HVAC chases, or the tops of interior walls, conditioned air is leaking out and unconditioned air is leaking in – right past whatever insulation is there. This is one of the most common reasons a home with adequate-looking insulation still performs poorly. You might notice it as drafts near recessed lights or ceiling fans even when windows are closed.
Pest or Rodent Damage
Rats, mice, and squirrels don’t just live in attic insulation – they shred it, flatten it, and saturate it with waste. A single nesting season can destroy a large section entirely. Signs include visible tunnels or nesting material burrowed into the insulation, droppings on top of or mixed into it, a strong ammonia smell when the hatch is opened, or sounds of movement in the attic at night. Insulation that has been contaminated by rodents can’t simply be topped off – it has to come out.
What to Do Right Now
- Take a quick visual from the hatch – don’t go all the way in yet. From the opening, look at the insulation depth relative to the joists and check for obvious discoloration, debris, or gaps. Photograph what you can see before anything is disturbed. This gives a technician a useful starting point.
- Note when the problem started and what changed. A recent roof repair, new HVAC equipment, or a pest sighting narrows the cause quickly. Write it down so you don’t have to reconstruct it during the visit.
- Check your energy bills for the past three months. A sudden spike compared to the same period last year is one of the clearest indicators that something in the thermal envelope has changed. Screenshot or print them – it’s useful documentation.
- Do not walk on attic insulation to investigate further. Blown-in insulation conceals gaps between joists; a misplaced step can go through the ceiling. If you suspect rodent contamination, don’t disturb it – dried rodent waste becomes airborne when agitated and is a genuine health hazard. Stop at the hatch and let a trained technician take it from there.
- If you smell something burning or notice any scorching near attic electrical, stop and call immediately. Degraded insulation near knob-and-tube wiring or improperly covered recessed fixtures is a fire risk. Don’t wait on that one.
