How Rockwool Products Fail – and How We Fix Them

Most Rockwool products in San Antonio homes fall into two camps: mineral wool batts and boards (like Rockwool Comfortbatt and Comfortboard) and, less commonly, Rockwool-branded spray-applied products. Here’s what we see in the field, and it’s different from what the brochure tells you:

• Comfortbatt compression in tight stud bays. San Antonio homes built in the 1970s and 80s often have irregular framing, and installers cram Rockwool batts into bays that are too shallow. Compressed mineral wool loses R-value fast – a 5.5″ batt squeezed into a 3.5″ cavity drops from R-23 to roughly R-15. We pull the compressed batts and spray open-cell foam into those bays instead, which fills the cavity completely and air-seals at the same time.
• Comfortboard sheathing gaps at rim joists. Rockwool Comfortboard is great at the rim joist until it isn’t. The boards are rigid, and San Antonio’s clay-heavy soil settles, which shifts framing enough to open gaps at the rim. Once air moves through those gaps, the board is just decoration. We remove the affected sections and spray closed-cell foam directly onto the rim joist – it expands to fill every gap and doesn’t care if the framing shifts another quarter inch.
• Moisture wicking in unconditioned attics. Rockwool is hydrophobic, which is a selling point – until condensation forms on the underside of a roof deck and drips onto the batts. The water doesn’t soak in, but it channels down to the ceiling drywall and shows up as stains. Homeowners replace the drywall and the stains come back. The fix is spray foam on the roof deck itself, which stops the condensation at the source. We’ve done this on dozens of 1960s ranch houses in Alamo Heights and Terrell Hills.
• Rodent damage in perimeter walls. Mineral wool doesn’t feed rodents, but they’ll tunnel through it anyway to get from the crawl space into the wall cavity. Once they’ve made a highway, the insulation loses its continuous coverage. We remove the compromised Rockwool, rodent-proof the entry points, and spray closed-cell foam – which rodents won’t tunnel through because it sets hard and offers no nesting material.
• DIY-installed Rockwool over existing fiberglass. We see this constantly: a homeowner or handyman lays Rockwool batts over old fiberglass in the attic without air sealing first. The fiberglass below has been filtering air for decades, and the Rockwool on top just slows the leak without stopping it. The homeowner wasted money and the attic is still hot. We pull both layers, air seal every penetration, and blow or spray the right product for the space. No more band-aid on top of band-aid.
